After an eventful start to the day with cancelled trains galore, we arrived at Cuffley by coach at 11am ready to begin our adventures! The children have been enjoying familiarising themselves with their pods and news surroundings, as well as tackling their first challenge of the day of putting pillow cases and duvet covers on - which was not as easy as it might sound for some!

Lunch is now about to be served before we all start our first activities this afternoon.

After lunch, with bellies full and energy levels fully recharged, our Year 5 adventurers were ready to dive headfirst into the great outdoors. The sun filtered through the woodland canopy as the groups split off to tackle their first rotation of thrilling afternoon activities. 

Things took a turn toward practical bushcraft with the fire-building challenge. Working in small teams, the children learnt the vital skills of selecting dry kindling, arranging the materials into effective structures and mastering the use of a fire striker. There was intense concentration all round as they patiently worked together to catch a spark. The sheer pride and excitement on their faces when those first wisps of smoke curled upward into a crackling flame was wonderful to see!

Pure strategy, stealth, and adrenaline were on full display on the laser tag battlefield. Hidden among the trees and ferns, Year 5 transformed into tactical experts. Teams darted from tree trunk to tree trunk, whispering to one another, ducking behind log piles and covering their teammates to secure woodland objectives. It was fast-paced, high-energy fun that had everyone completely absorbed in the mission!

Perhaps the ultimate test of cooperation and empathy this afternoon was the Nightline. Blindfolded and holding onto a single guide rope, the children had to navigate a winding woodland trail full of dips, low branches, logs and unexpected twists and turns. Unable to rely on their sight, they had to depend entirely on the voices and warnings of their classmates ahead and behind them!

There was a nervous buzz of excitement as the children approached the zip line tower, gazing up into the forest canopy. Harnesses were checked and one by one, the children stepped up to the launch platform. For many, taking that leap of faith off the edge required a huge burst of courage - and every single child rose to the occasion! Screams of delight echoed through the forest as they flew through the treetops, wind rushing past, grinning from ear to ear as they touched down safely at the end. The cheers and encouragement from teammates waiting below showed true Cuffley camaraderie from the start!

To round off an incredible first afternoon, we gathered together for a lovely outside dinner, enjoying a delicious, hearty meal out in the fresh woodland air while chatting and laughing about the day's highlights.

As dusk began to settle over the camp, we gathered around the warm glow of the campfire. It was the perfect, cosy finish to an action-packed first day - sharing stories, singing camp songs, and soaking in the atmosphere of the woods under the evening sky.

Now, a lot of very happy, very tired children are making their way to their pods to get some well-earned rest ahead of another great day of activities tomorrow!

And Day 2 has started! After a good nights sleep in both camps, we have all just enjoyed a cooked breakfast and now have a little time to relax ahead of our morning activities starting soon!

Today gave everyone the chance to swap around and dive into all the brilliant activities they hadn't been able to try yesterday - whether that meant conquering the zip line, dodging laser beams, sparking fires, or guiding each other along the nightline.

A huge highlight of the day was the climbing wall, which proved to be an instant hit. Towering above the woodland floor, it gave the children the chance to really push themselves beyond their comfort zones. Grip by grip, foothold by foothold, they persevered - spurred on by wholehearted cheers and shouts of encouragement from their friends below.

So many of the children showed incredible resilience and determination, climbing all the way to the very top before leaning back into their harnesses to abseil smoothly back down to earth. The looks on their faces as they touched down, a brilliant mixture of pure relief, disbelief and sheer uncontainable pride, was an amazing thing to witness!

After working up an enormous appetite scaling walls and navigating the woods, dinner tonight was something special. We headed over to the outdoor Pizza Palace, where everyone was treated to mouth-watering, freshly made pizzas cooked right before our eyes in the outdoor pizza oven. Sitting together out in the open air, slicing into warm pizzas was the ultimate camp reward and the smiles around the tables said it all.

To cap off another great day, we gathered once more around the crackling campfire. With the embers glowing into the night, we traded our favourite moments from the day, sang our hearts out and celebrated the days achievements!
